Women can now inherit properties in Abia State as the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, on Thursday signed the ‘female person inheritance of property’ bill into law.

While assenting to the bill at the government house in Umuahia, the governor commended the House of Assembly for facilitating the passage of the bill, describing it as the most important legislation passed by the seventh assembly.

Stressing that it had become unacceptable to continue “to treat women as second-class citizens in their own families”, Ikpeazu described the new law as “historic, positively disruptive and capable of setting our society on the path of equal opportunities and sustainable development.”

He congratulated Abia women on the feat and assured them of the government’s support in protecting the interest of the girl child.
