A pastoral Secretariat built for the Catholic Deaf Community has been commissioned by the Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, Most Reverend Doctor Stephen Dami Mamza.

The event which commenced with a holy mass was celebrated by the Bishop with some priests in attendance was held in Saint Theresa’s Cathedral Jimeta.

Most Reverend Dami Mamza who said he would not have fulfilled the Episcopal motto which says “together we succeed” without including the ministry of the deaf called for their inclusion all activities of the diocese

He explained that the motive behind building the Secretariat is to make the church accessible in the administration of the Sacrament and the liturgy to the deaf community.

The Catholic Bishop pointed out that the diocese of Yola wants to offer pastoral care to the deaf who feel isolated and excluded from actively participating in church life and worship.

He reiterated the commitment of the church towards the welfare of the deaf by making it compulsory for priests to learn sign language before being ordained as a Catholic priest of the Yola Diocese.

The cleric announced that a class session for the deaf will begin by January next year and encouraged all priests and parishioners under the Yola diocese to take part to learn sign language.

Doctor Dami Mamza commended Reverend father Maurice Kwairanga for initiating the project which was coordinated by the body of Justice Development and Peace Commission.

There were Goodwill messages from Reverend Father Istifanu Rokoba and the chairman of the laity council, Saint Theresa’s cathedral, Mr. John Nyadaya.

Highlights of the event included blessings of the new officials of the Catholic deaf association of Yola Diocese by the Bishop.

The officials are Colman Christopher as chairman, Vivian Batheloum as vice chairman, Flora Wilfred as Secretary, and Linda Paul to serve as Public Relations Officer.
