The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 19 youths for attending a same-sex marriage ceremony, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Lawan Ibrahim, the spokesperson of the board, said on Tuesday in Kano that the youths were gathered to witness the wedding of two suspected homosexuals identified as Abba and Mujahid.
Ibrahim said the youths were arrested after the board got a hint about the same-sex marriage.
According to him, hisbah officers arrived at the wedding venue before the commencement of the ceremony.
He said, “Among those arrested were 15 females and four males. Abba and Mujahid escaped immediately after Hisbah personnel arrived at the wedding venue, but the organiser, Salma Usman, 21, is in our custody.”
He added, “We shall intensify efforts to ensure that Abba and Mujahid are arrested.”
Ibrahim said the arrested youths would be handed over to the police, adding that some of the ladies arrested claimed to have been invited from other states.
He pledged the board’s commitment and determination to eradicate all vices in the state.
