Seven persons were killed and 29 injured in a car accident that occurred during the annual Calabar Carnival on Tuesday.

The sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Maikano Hassan said the accident occurred when a car lost control and rammed into a crowd of onlookers during the bikers parade, one of the activities of the carnival, in front of the Jumat Mosque in Bogobiri, Calabar.

Hassan said the injured persons, which include 21 male adults, three women, two male children and three female children, were rushed to Naval hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for medical attention.

He added that the remains of the seven deceased had also been deposited in the two hospitals in Calabar.

The incident brought the day five activity of the carnival to an end as the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, who was already seated with other dignitaries, abruptly directed the immediate dis- continuation of the bikers’ parade in honour of the victims of the accident.

Governor Ayade also offered his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and promised to bring to book the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident.
