The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Prof. Uchenna Ikonne, is dead.

An official statement by the family says the governorship candidate died at 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the National Hospital, Abuja.

According to the statement, “He was recovering after taking proper treatment in the United Kingdom but relapsed a few days ago leading to multiple cardiac arrests from which he didn’t recover from.”

The announcement is coming hours after the PDP Youth Movement called for the replacement of Prof. Ikonne as the party’s governorship candidate in Abia ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The group warned the national leadership of the party to reconsider the “failing health” of Prof Ikonne, and find a replacement for him.

Prof. Ikonne, a one-time vice-chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), died at the age of 65.
