The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Country Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, has hailed the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Gombe State Government for domesticating the social protection policy that is geared towards bringing families out of extreme poverty.

Munduate made the commendation at the launch of the policy in Gombe State recently where she stated the UNICEF’s commitment towards working, providing knowledge and technical advice, having had the social protection experience.

The policy document was launched by Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya through his Deputy,  Manasseh Daniel Jatau with the UNICEF’s Country Representative and top Government officials in attendance.

Munduate urged the Gombe State government to ensure that the policy is implemented to later in order to achieve the desired result for the betterment of the lives of the citizens.

While launching the policy document, the Governor said that the state government was moved to launch the social protection policy in the state in it’s quest to provide protection for women and children faced with a high level of poverty and inequality that increases their protection risk and their vulnerability to diseases, deaths, and sustainable development.

He noted that the Gombe State Government aligned with the Federal Government’s social protection policy to provide protection to the vulnerable population in the state which constitutes mainly women and children.

The governor explained that the vision of the policy is to have a healthy, peaceful, and prosperous Gombe State with poverty reduced to 15% by 2030. “This vision is in alignment with Gombe State 10 year development plan 2021-2030 (DEVAGOM) as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to social protection policy,” he stressed.

While presenting an overview of the Social Protection Policy, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Budget, Planning, and Development Partner Coordination Office,  Dr. Ishiyaku Mohammed who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Abubakar Dauda Gadam, noted that they would play a critical role in reducing poverty, eliminating unequal treatment and segregation on the grounds of sex or creed.
