The Commissioner of Police Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani urges the electorates not to be deterred by the recent happenings in the state to renege on their resolutions to make their vote count in the 2023 general elections.
Confirming the simultaneous attacks and killings in the state on Wednesday evening, CP Ammani referred to the attacks as cowardly antics of hoodlums aimed at creating fear in the citizens and ultimately disrupt the electoral process.
He however strongly condemned the barbaric acts, commiserated with the affected Parties and family members of the deceased and vowed to fish out the perpetrators and make them face the full wrath of the law; “the Police and other Security Agencies are set to ensure a peaceful and credible elections in the State.”
The CP recounts the black Wednesday ordeals; “Subversive criminal elements, suspected to be IPOB/ESN renegades, in the night hours of 22/02/2023 at different locations, ambushed and simultaneously attacked and murdered People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) members, and also attempted to attack the convoy of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate.”
“Preliminary investigations into the incidents show that the armed hoodlums, operating in a tricycle, attacked a PDP campaign Mini Bus at Topland by Ebony Paint Road, Amechi-Awkunanaw Enugu and used a petrol bomb to set it ablaze, burning to death its driver, simply identified as one KC Great (male).”
“Similarly, another set of the same armed assailants, operating in a Hilux vehicle, attacked and set ablaze the campaign vehicle of the Labour Party, at Eke-Otu Amechi-Awkunanaw Enugu, burning to death the Party’s Senatorial Candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District, Barrister Oyibo Chukwu and his Personal Assistant.”
In an official bulletin signed by the Enugu State Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe reveals that the miscreants also attempted to attack the convoy of the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) at Eke, Agbani, Nkanu West but were repelled by Security Operatives.
“Meanwhile, normalcy has generally been restored in the mentioned locations, while further development will be communicated accordingly,” DSP Ndukwe wrote.
