NewsNigeriaPoliticsGov. Ugwuanyi Set To Create 353 Autonomous Communities In Enugu State

The seven-man committee set up by the Enugu State Government on the creation of autonomous communities in the state on Wednesday submitted her report to the State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Out of the seven hundred and sixteen, 716, communities that applied for autonomous community status, the committee recommends 353 communities qualified based on their laid down criteria.

Prof. Felix Asogwa Chairman of the Committee presenting the report to the Governor at the Government House disclosed, “The committee received 716 applications from different communities across the 17 local government areas of the state.”

“After screening the applications, we embarked on tour of the shortlisted communities to verify availability of requisite basic social amenities like; schools, hospitals, civic centres/town halls, markets, worship centres among others which were stipulated as the necessary requirements in the advert.”

Prof. Asogwa further revealed that most communities desire to become autonomous for ease of accomplishing developmental agenda at smaller units while some requests were purely for self-aggrandizement by some individuals.

He also mentioned some reasons for disqualifying communities; internal disputes, communities located within same geographical zone amongst others.

Receiving the report, Governor Ugwuanyi in his speech commended members of the committee for their diligence and timely completion of their assignment.

The Governor then announced that his administration will commence implementation of the report while the incoming administration of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah will complete the process.

“Peace and development are the pillars behind the planned creation of more autonomous communities in the state hence I urge members of the communities that applied to promote peace, unity and progress in their respective areas,” Ugwuanyi advised.

Recall that on 13th of September 2022, Governor Ugwuanyi inaugurated the 7-Man committee; they were saddled with the responsibilities of developing the template, evaluating applications and recommending applicant communities for autonomous community status.

Other members of the committee present at the event were Dr. Eric Oluedo, Barr. Anayo Enechukwu, Prof. Ngozi Ejionueme, Prof. Sam Ugwu and Mrs. Josephine Onyia (the secretary); Prof. Ikenna Omeje is presently out of the country.
