“Yes, daddy” has been trending on social media recently to the extent that social media users have started a “Yes, daddy” challenge.

“Yes, daddy” began to trend on Saturday a few hours after Peoples Gazette, in an exclusive report, shared a leaked phone conversation between the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and the founder of the Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo.

In the phone conversation which reportedly took place on the eve of Nigeria’s presidential election, Obi begged Bishop Oyedepo to help canvass votes from the Christian community for him.

Referring to the revered cleric as “daddy”, Obi was heard repeatedly saying, “Thank you, daddy” which has kept many who listened to the purported phone conversation amused.

The leaked audio raised dust all over social media. Many debunked it as being doctored while others accepted it as authentic, accusing Obi of being a religious bigot for describing the presidential poll as a “religious war”.

Meanwhile, Obi’s supporters, better known as “Obidients” saw it as propaganda by the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, to distract Nigerians from the forthcoming court case challenging Bola Tinubu’s victory.

This is despite the confirmation of the authenticity of the controversial audio by some LP members, particularly Kenneth Okonkwo and Valentine Obienyem, Obi’s media aides.

Okonkwo and Obienyem said the phone conversation between their principal and the cleric was edited out of context, with the latter revealing that “our Nnewi prodigal brother is responsible for the leak.

Reacting to the leaked phone conversation, Festus Keyamo, the spokesperson of the APC presidential campaign council described it as a “Yes-daddy audio”, condemning the weaponisation of religion for political purposes

He said, “Having confirmed the authenticity of what is now known as the Peter Obi ‘Yes-daddy’ audio, I think the real culprit here is the so-called ‘men of God’ who allowed themselves to be used by an unscrupulous politician to seek to inflame religious passions in our dear country in the name of politics.

“So,  they were telling their hapless adherents that they heard the voice of the Lord, it was actually Peter Obi’s telephone calls they heard and not God’s voice. This is deceitful, shameful and disgusting.”

Continuing, he said, “As for Peter Obi who declared an election a ‘religious war’ in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic country like ours, the real God has just exposed him and his dream to be Nigeria’s President one day has just died a natural death. ‘Yes-daddy’ is now permanently etched in the consciousness of the nation and we will NEVER forget!”

But “Obidients”, refusing to be cajoled into silence and to be intimidated, used the situation to their advantage by making the “Yes, daddy” trend, thereby canvassing post-election support for Obi ahead of the court hearing.

Unrelenting in their support for Obi, “Obidients” launched a “Yes, daddy” t-shirt.
