The Senator representing Anambra South senatorial zone, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, has pledged to devote N1 billion Naira to secure Nnewi and Anambra South. This pledge, according to the senator, is the first trench, in his determination to explore all instrumentality of the state to ensure that Anambra South is safe. “We are devoting N1 billion Naira towards security of Nnewi and Anambra South, for a start,” Sen. Ubah has said.
Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah who revealed his plans for security and youth development on Tuesday April 11, at the summit organized by ‘Concerned Nnewi Citizens’, also pledged to expend a total of about N150 million to set up a proper youth skill acquisition centre in Nnewi. For that purpose, the old Nitel building was mentioned as the location for the skill acquisition centre and was inspected by the senator and others who were at the event.
At the summit, top on the list of concerns were security and youth empowerment. Anambra South has been one of the most traumatized places, with the disturbing security deterioration of the Southeast. In regards to security, Sen. Ubah further said that he would commit N600 million Naira in life insurance of the two hundred youths who shall be trained on various aspects of community policing to ensure maximum security of lives and properties in Nnewi and within Anambra South senatorial zone. The insurance, he revealed, would take care of the family or needs of those doing the community policing so that in any event, their families are not abandoned to fate.
Still on security, Ubah emphasized that security of lives and properties is critical for the progress of any society and that is why he is determined to give it his all. “In terms of security, Nnewi will set the pace in Anambra and beyond. We are assuring our brothers and sisters that Nnewi is safe. We are dedicating our energy towards securing lives and properties of Anambra South.” Meanwhile, security gadgets like walkie talkie and other ICT enabled devices are already installed towards achieving the set goal. The devices have all roads and parts of Nnewi covered with camera. Different parts of Nnewi were showing real-time at the event through these ICT enabled devices. The walkie talkie deployed at various points of Anambra South were also tested. To facilitate smooth operation and monitoring, Sen. Ubah has donated about twelve sienna vehicles and twenty motorcycles to the community policing volunteers.
In their speeches, Melie Onyejepu said that part of the essence of the group is to demand the location of various collective Nnewi properties, make a case for youths and also secure the home front. For the President General of Nzukora Nnewi, Dr. Maduka Atueyi, security is critical but he admonished that it must be centralized. He also lamented that Nnewi youths are now very aggressive. “Our youths are now very aggressive. Once you talk, they challenge you and some will take you to court. Our youths are becoming rascally and it must be arrested.” Dr. Maduka also agreed that the issue of collective Nnewi property should be looked into with sincerity and finally, he sued for peace. “We need peace in Nnewi,” the PG said.
Earlier, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah said that where Nnewi goes should be a product of collective decision. “Decision on the direction Nnewi goes will be a collective decision, not a one man’s fiat.” He also called on all well meaning Nnewi indigenes to support efforts towards a progressive Nnewi.
