A boat capsized in Shagari Dam near Lambara village in Shagari LGA of Sokoto state, resulting in the death of 15 persons.

According to an eyewitness, the boat was trying to cross to Mashayan Dundee Village to collect firewood.

The political administrator of the council, Aliyu Abubakar, who confirmed the incident said more than 15 children drowned, and another 25 are still missing.

“Fifteen bodies, 13 girls and two boys were recovered by local rescue teams and buried in the village,” he said.

In a similar development, seven children have died in a Canoe mishap while trying to fetch water in Gusau, Zamfara state capital.

The Acting Public Relations Officer, PPRO of Zamfara State Police Command ASP Yazid Abubakar, in a statement the children died in the boat mishap while returning from where they went to get water for domestic use.

ASP Yazid said a traditional title holder, Idi Yusuf Sarkin Ruwa reported the incident and the police rescue team rushed the victims to the police clinic, but they were confirmed dead.

He said the victims were inhabitants of the Tullukawa area of Gusau metropolitan who was suffering from the scarcity of water and had to cross the river to get water for domestic use and lost their lives in the process.

Mohammed Yusuf who lost two of his children in the tragedy appealed to the State government to as a matter of urgency address the problem of water shortage in Gusau metropolis to prevent further recurrence of the tragedy.
