The Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U-20 team on Wednesday defeated host nation Argentina 2-0 to qualify for the quarter-final of the U-20 World Cup.

Ibrahim Muhammad scored the first goal of the match in the 71st minute, while Haliru Saeki scored with a diving header in added time to take the match out of the reach of the six-time champions, Argentina.

The host nation rallied to equalise the goal but failed to utilize their chances.

The win against the host nation has put Nigeria on the chart as serious contenders for the trophy

Recall that Nigeria has only won two silver medals in the tournament with the latest being 2005 when she lost 2-1 to Messi led Argentina in the final.

Meanwhile, another Africa representative, Tunisia, bid goodbye to the competition after it was thrashed 4-1 by Brazil.

Another African country, Gambia will seek to join Nigerian in the Last 8 when they confront Uruguay on Thursday.
