Mr. Uche Calistus Ugwu, member representing Udi North Constituency has been elected Speaker and of the 8th Enugu State House of Assembly.
Ugwu was nominated for the post by Iloabuchi Aniagu, member representing Nkanu West State Constituency. The motion was seconded by Chukwudi Nwankwo, member representing Awgu South constituency; Ugwu’s nomination was unopposed.
Uche Calistus Ugwu was declared the Speaker Of the 8th Enugu State House of Assembly by the Clerk of the House, Barrister Emmanuel Udaya; Ugwu was the Deputy Speaker in the 7th House of Assembly.
Also elected was Mr. Ezenta Ezeani, member representing Igbo-Etiti East Constituency, as the Deputy Speaker; Ezeani was nominated by Jane Eneh member representing Awgu North Constituency.
In his inaugural speech, the Speaker expressed profound appreciation to God for making the day possible and his colleagues for entrusting him with the position.
Promising a fair leadership style to all members irrespective of party affiliation, Ugwu reiterates that the diversion of parties of members is a source of strength not weakness; “In the 8th Assembly, there is no Labour party members or Peoples Democratic Party members but members of the Enugu State House of Assembly.”
“The 8th Assembly will live up to expectation by delivering dividend of democracy to them, noting the Assembly shall adopt negotiation and diplomacy in resolving conflict with the executive arm of the government,” the Speaker assures.
He further solicited for support and cooperation of his colleagues in achieving the lofty objectives of the current Assembly.
“Other principal officers of the House will be announced in the next adjourned date, 11 July, 2023,” the Speaker revealed
