A lecturer with the Bayero University Kano (BUK) Prof. Abubakar Rasheed who was appointed seven years as the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) has resigned voluntarily to continue lecturing at the same institution.
Prof. Rasheed told Journalists on Monday in Abuja about his resignation, after approving the issuance of a provisional license to establish another Kogi State-owned University located at Kabba local government area of the State.
The Executive Secretary of NUC, while presenting the letter of approval to Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, in Abuja on Monday said the university will be the 62nd state government-owned university in the country.
“On behalf of the Commission, with effect from 26th June 2023, Kogi State University Kabba has been recognized as one the 62 state-owned universities in the country,” he said.
He had notified the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) of the establishment of the institution, describing the new university as his last baby in the Commission, having granted approvals to numerous universities in the country during his seven-year administration.
Governor Bello had earlier said the Bill to establish the university was sent to
the Kogi House of Assembly and was passed into law.
The Governor expressed hope that the first set of students would be admitted into the institution before his tenure expired.
“The establishment of the university was to satisfy the age-long desire of the people of Kogi West, resources had been set aside to start the university immediately,” he said.
