Police Operatives serving in Awkunanaw Division of the Enugu State Police Command in the early hours of Friday 7 July 2023 intercepted armed criminal elements attempting to snatch an ENTRACO branded Sharon minivan from the driver at One-Day, along Agbani Road in Enugu.

Engaging the miscreants in a gun duel, they abandoned the vehicle and escaped with varying degrees of fatal gunshot wounds; a manhunt of the fled hoodlums led to their lifeless bodies in a forest behind G. Ede Filling Station/7-Up, at Awkunanaw, Enugu, where they escaped.

In the Police bulletin signed by the Police Public Relations Officer DSP Daniel Ndukwe, reveals that on searching their abandoned vehicle, incriminating exhibits were recovered: “one (1) AK-47 rifle with a magazine loaded with nineteen (19) live ammunition of 7.62 calibers, two (2) bottles of a petrol bomb, one (1) hammer, one (1) plier and one (1) Jack-knife.”

Other items recovered include, “A pair of canvas with blood stains abandoned by one of the escaping miscreants, fetish objects, one (1) mobile phone, three (3) criminal hoods, one (1) hooded long sleeve, another without a hood and other incriminating exhibits.”

The gallant Police Operatives who dislodged those hoodlums were on assignment to safeguard residents from criminals who may want to enforce the prohibited illegal sit-at-home order in the state.

Reassuring residents of the Command’s avowed measures to safeguard lives and properties, the Commissioner of Police Enugu State Command CP Ahmed Ammani reaffirms, “The Police and other Security Forces shall remain focused, sustain the ongoing onslaught against the subversive criminals and ensure that the good people of the State continue to go about their lawful businesses without fear of any kind.”

CP Ammani also calls on the general public especially owners of medical facilities and those residing within the Awkunanaw, One-Day, Topland, and Achara Layout axis of Enugu metropolis, to promptly report to the Police, anyone, dead or alive, sighted with gunshot wounds.
