NewsNigeriaPoliticsImo/Bayelsa/Kogi Elections: Assure us there’ll be integrity – Sowunmi challenges INEC

Segun Sowunmi, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to assure that there would be integrity in the November gubernatorial election processes of Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa States.

The PDP chieftain in an interview on Wednesday said that the call has become necessary, so that the PDP would not waste its time going into the elections that would not be credible.

He said, “INEC no longer has the ability to tell us anything that we’ll believe because much was said before the 2023 general elections, and you know how they performed on that. Ironically the way these laws are, it all seems as if there is no consequence for INEC and its leadership for things around elections.

“The winners and losers will go to court, INEC will just come and pretend as if it was not the one that created the mess. So going into the next set of elections, our leaders are saying, “Yes elections will come up in these locations, we have the responsibility and obligation to participate, but we have to tell INEC to assure us. Should we not waste our time so that we can tell the whole world that democracy is not working in Nigeria and we will walk out of it.

“There is no point if we keep holding the shovel and the stick all the time. What we demand is a process that has integrity, is fair, is equitable and is just. We don’t want to have an election where we’ll be arguing, “Did you win? “Was it rigged? “Was it not rigged?

“This is a country where if you take your credit card to Zamfara State you can pick money. If we can run a monetary system that has integrity, there is no justification for running an electoral system that doesn’t have integrity,” he said.
