Senator Ebenezer Ikeyina, who represented Anambra Central at the upper chamber of the National Assembly has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to restore peace in the South-East region of the country for the sake of national unity.
Ikeyina in an interview on Wednesday said that Tinubu should demonstrate that his administration is ready to bring Nigerians together who are more divided now than ever.
The former lawmaker said that the South-East economy has shrunk, with the region losing billions of Naira in revenue as a result of insecurity.
He lamented that so many lives have been lost and properties destroyed, even as he urged the federal government to take decisive action to end insecurity in the region.
He appealed to Tinubu to use his good offices to end the sit-at-home order. He noted that the President can go a step further by addressing the issue of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, through a political approach.
He said, “What we want is peace in the South-East region. The President has said that he would ensure national unity in the country and give all ethnic groups a sense of belonging. Let him start now. We cannot afford to wait any longer. The devastation in the south-East region is frightening. The leaders of the South-East have been meeting and we want the President as a father of the nation to pay attention to this pressing issue. South-East is part of Nigeria and anything that affects the region also affects the entire country.
“Investigation has shown that the release of Nnamdi Kanu will hasten the peace process in the region and this is why we are making this appeal to the President and we are very hopeful that he will respond positively,” he said.
