NewsNigeriaPoliticsAkwa Ibom Govt. partners with Innoson for transportation palliatives

The people of Akwa Ibom State might be getting free transportation services as succour to the effects of the hike in the price of petrol courtesy of Governor Umo Eno’s administration.

This is coming against the backdrop of a partnership between the Akwa Ibom State Government and Nigeria’s first indigenous automobile manufacturing company, Innoson Vehicles.

Announcing the partnership on Thursday, Governor Eno said that it “aims to provide palliatives, especially in transportation for our citizens affected by the removal of fuel subsidy.”

The Governor’s intervention is to reduce the burden of the huge cost of transportation to Akwa Ibomites following the rise in the pump price of premium motor spirit, PMS, also known as petrol or fuel.

The price of petrol soared from N197 to N537 barely two days after President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of the petrol subsidy at his inauguration on May 29.

This was followed by an upswing in the cost of transportation and overall inflation that led to the rise in the consumer prices of food items.

The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, in its latest report, pegged the country’s inflation rate at 22.79 per cent – a 0.38 increase from the 22.41 per cent recorded in June.

On Tuesday, the price of petrol climbed to N617, prompting the Akwa Ibom State Government to take the urgent step to “alleviate the plight of our people and foster growth and pride in our nation.”
