Ten teenage students who attacked their teacher for stopping one of them from cheating during an examination have been arrested, the police have said.
The students are from Isanbi Comprehensive High School, Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, and the teacher was identified as Kolawole Shonuga.
According to reports, Shonuga, last Tuesday, caught one 18-year-old Ashimi Adebanjo cheating while invigilating an examination for the SS1 Art Class, and seized his paper.
Annoyed for being caught, Ashimi and his friends ambushed the teacher at the school gate after school hours and beat him up.
Omotola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, said that Shonuga reported the incident at Remo Police Division.
Odutola also confirmed the arrest of the ten students with The Guardian reporting that they have already been arraigned in court for assault.
The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS, in the State, Felix Agbesanwa, also confirmed the incident and condemned the behaviour of the students.
Agbesanwa stressed that students who assault their teachers “must be made to face the law.”
“The incident is true and I have been briefed. Our stand is that any student who raises his hand against his teacher should face the wrath of the law,” the chairman said.
“There’s no going back on that. No student must raise his hand against a teacher, whether Ogun Teach teachers or permanent teachers. A teacher is a teacher.”
