The Enugu State Government has announced plans to construct 71 roads within the Enugu metropolis and 10 major other roads spread across the three senatorial zones; these 10 roads link various Local government areas in the state.

Rising from the Executive Council meeting with the State Governor on Monday, the Commissioner for Works, Dr. Gerald Otiji addressing Government House correspondents said the government has identified roads to make dual carriageway and strategic points to build a flyover so as to ease traffic congestion.

“We identified about 71 roads in Enugu urban. We have scoped them and we are on the verge of getting them rehabilitated or reconstructed. These 71 roads cut across Trans Ekulu, Abakpa, Emene, Awkunanaw, Coal Camp, Asata, New Layout, Achara Layout, and Idaw River, among others.”

“Also identified were areas with heavy morning traffic and traffic jams where the government will build flyovers. Among them is Abakpa Junction. We are also trying to navigate the Chris Chemist/Old Park junction area so that we can build a flyover there.”

“There are equally some existing roads, such as the Enugu-Ugwogo Nike-Opi-Nsukka road and GRA–Trans Ekulu road; which will be dualized due to the heavy traffic on them.”

Meanwhile, to alleviate the masses’ hardship occasioned by fuel subsidy removal, the Commissioner for Information, Aka Eze Aka, reveals the government’s plan to procure mass transit buses as a palliative to the people.

“The Council has also noted that part of the palliatives to support the people of Enugu State is to provide mass transit buses.”

Another measure set by the State Executive Council is approval for high-tech security infrastructure; this is to support the security architecture of the government of Enugu State.

The Ministries, Departments, and agencies (MDAs) are not left out in the rehabilitation exercises as the Council has equally approved the digitalization of the MDAs to enhance work efficiency and form the foundation of the e-governance platform introduced by the new administration.
