The Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah assures residents of the Coal City of reconstruction and construction of 71 roads within the urban area before the end of the year.

Dr. Mbah stated this on Thursday when he flagged off the construction of New Enugu City roads made up of 17km dual carriageway and feeder roads, 40km Owo-Ubahu-Amankanu-Neke-Ikem dual carriageway, and the construction/reconstruction of 71 urban roads in Enugu capital city; the 71 urban roads would be simultaneously executed.

The 40km Owo-Ubahu-Amankanu-Neke-Ikem dual carriageway road is strategic as it promises to be a major gateway to the North Central and rural areas in the state, thus unlocking the rural economy.

“We promised to unlock our rural economy and the best way to do that is to ensure that we have access roads to our farmlands and we will also create special economic zones in our rural areas. But we are not thinking about agriculture as food only, but also as export commodities,” Dr. Mbah states.

“The funds for these roads have been secured. So, there is no reason the contractors will not complete these roads when due. We are not going to entertain any variation, delay, or time overrun because the funds will be provided and we will ensure that we put in place a close monitor to ensure not only that the standards we have agreed upon are met, but also that the timelines are met strictly.”

Promising an uncompromised standard project, the Governor stated, “We shall also ensure the roads are well paved and that there are no open drainages. Also, the streetlights will be fully functional.”

On the New Enugu City project to be constructed by China Communication Construction Company, CCCC, the Governor said the city will not only be functional in 2 years but will compete with any great city in the world.

The New Enugu City project sits on 10,000 hectares of land off Enugu-Abakaliki Road and traverses Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, and Nkanu West LGAs.

“The New City will be fully equipped with a dedicated power project, a central sewage system, and high-speed internet.”

“The first phase of the project would cover 26 square kilometers comprising the Happy Island, the Vitality Bay, and the Innovation Park in line with the purposes the New City is to serve.”

The Deputy Managing Director of CCCC Nigeria, Henry Li, in his speech assured the state government of first-rate projects and timely completion.

“As the contractor entrusted with this significant undertaking, we recognize the responsibility that comes with it. We pledge our unwavering commitment to delivering the benchmark road on time and with the highest quality,” Li promised.

Meanwhile, the joy of residents knew no bounds as they witnessed the flag off of the road reconstruction/construction in the state.

Enugu roads are currently in shambles and a serious concern to motorists hence the happy residents, Council Chairmen, and traditional rulers trooped out to thank the Governor for keeping his promise made during the campaign; they promised to cooperate with the government and the contractors to ensure speedy and hitch-free completion of the projects.
