The EU-UN flagships program “the Spotlight Initiative” has allocated £500 million to address SGBV and enhance Anti-Corruption and Rule of Law.”
Ruben Aguilera, the Acting Head of Development Cooperation at the European Union (EU) delegation in Nigeria, disclosed this in Abuja during a Workshop on SGBV for First-Time, First Ladies organized by the Nigeria Governors Wives Forum and UN-Women.
“The new programs for SGBV in Nigeria are worth £12 million,” Aguilera said.
The head of the EU delegation called on the Federal Government to allocate more funds to address the issue of Sexual- and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
Mr Aguilera emphasized that tackling SGBV requires the collective effort of all stakeholders and reiterated the EU’s commitment to assisting Nigeria in addressing sexual violence and related issues.
Beatrice Eyong, the UN-Women representative for Nigeria and ECOWAS, stressed the need for the swift dispensation of justice for SGBV victims.
“There must be a political will to reduce impunity, some instances wherein survivors wait for justice for extended periods, or perpetrators are released shortly after arrest, fostering a sense of impunity,” Eyong said.
Ambassador Olufolake Abdulrazak, the Wife of the Kwara State Governor and chairperson of the Nigeria Governors Wives Forum explained that the event was organized for the first ladies to influence policies and legislation for creating a safer society and deepen their understanding of mitigating SGBV.
Ambassador Abdulrazak urged the first ladies to exploit the training to implement measures in their respective states effectively.
The European Union has proposed new legislation on combating violence against women and domestic violence.
The proposal covers the areas of prevention, protection, access to justice, support, coordination and cooperation between authorities.
