The 13th WHO End-of-term Joint Operations Review for the Northeast has opened in Yola, the Adamawa State capital with participants from Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.

The 3-day review meeting is aimed at reviewing achievements recorded by the three states with the support and assistance from World Health Organization, WHO.

Declaring the meeting open Monday, at Green City Hotel Yola, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, WHO Representative in Nigeria said the essence of the meeting is to review operations, and health services provided to communities that are affected by insurgencies whether in IDP camps or hard to reach areas.

Mulombo added that the WHO also provides interventions such as in nutrition, and tackling Gender-Based Violence in the context of protracted crises.

“World Health Organization (WHO) is developing a Protracted Emergency Framework for every country to provide health services to people based on security challenges, natural disasters or climate change.

“This particular meeting is different from what we have been doing before because it happened when WHO was developing Protracted Emergency Framework within which every country is subjected to security issues or challenges, natural disasters or climate change and others are supposed to flow,” he said

He described the meeting as appropriate to make sure hard-to-reach communities faced with insurgencies have access to the services they needed.

“WHO works with other partners and NGOs in providing vaccination for both polio and other preventable diseases, and supporting affected communities in detecting, responding to outbreak and other health challenges,” he said.

There were goodwill messages, from the Federal Ministry of Health, the State Commissioners of Health from Borno, Ad, Adamawa, and Yobe as well as partners.
