LifestyleNewsNigeriaFour ways to have a memorable ‘detty December’ on a low budget

December, that time of the year when we take a break from the day-to-day hustling and have fun, is here again, which is what ‘detty December’ suggests.

It is the end of the year – a festive season – and no one will think you are out of place if you intend to have as much fun as you can get. After all, just like Kizz Daniel sang, “You don work, you don try try. You suppose to dey j’aiye j’aiye.”

But one thing about ‘detty December’ is that you can have the correct ‘gbedu’ this season only if your bank account is green. You get what I mean? Na only person wey him pocket dey ‘breathe’ dey ‘dorime’.

However, if your account balance is not ‘balance-ing’, don’t feel sad. We are sharing tips on how you can still ‘chop life’ this Christmas season on a low budget without piling up debts in January.

You know the saying, January has 59 days! And it will be unwise to ‘detty December’ your way into a sapa-filled 2024.

Rest

Am I out of my mind to say you should rest this festive season? Apparently not! Here’s why. Nigeria’s economy dealt with the majority of us this year.

We worked so hard to pay the bills with the alarming inflation rate. You will, therefore, agree with me that this holiday is probably the only one you get to take a break from the hustling and bustling of the year.

So, if you do not have the energy and cash to ‘turn up’; stay at home, sleep, eat, watch movies, and play indoor games with your family. Your body needs that rest, and, it is also a good way to avoid unnecessary billing. But then, if you still feel like catching fun…

Make a budget

There is the possibility of ‘dorime’ getting into your head this festive season and it might push you to want to spend, spend, and spend some more.

But after saving diligently for the past eleven months, it would not be wise to spend it all in one week. So, make a budget. From food, drinks, tickets for shows, hangouts and new outfits, the budget should accommodate all your expenses for the holiday.

You can have a ‘detty December’ and still be in a good place financially by the new year, and a budget makes that possible. But if you’re thinking, “I can’t possibly have fun on a budget”, you have the option of…

Hang out with friends

By going out with friends, you are not only spending less because you share bills with them, but you also get the opportunity to spend quality time with them.

And it’s more exhilarating when you have fun with friends. So, include your friends in your plans for the holiday right away!

However, if ‘sapa’ hold you well well, and you need an alternative to hanging out, you can…

Organise a house party

Uncle, instead of lying in your bed wondering why ‘sapa’ is ruining Christmas for you, host a party at home and invite your friends. Aunty, why borrow money to attend that party when you can have your party right in your room?

Go ahead and pick a date for the house party and invite your family and friends to your crib. Worried about food, snacks, and drinks? Tell each of your friends to come with some food or snacks or drinks. You see? Sense will not kill you.
