Heavily armed gunmen attacked two banks in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State on Wednesday evening, and killed three persons while leaving several others seriously injured.
The robbers, numbering about 20, stormed the town in motorcycles and a small black car and began to shoot recklessly into the air.
While some of the gunmen were keeping security operatives and residents at bay, others went into the banks.
As reported by the Independent, the banks were Wema Bank and Access Bank in the Odo Oja and Okeosun areas of the town.
They blew up the bulletproof doors of the banks with explosives and carted away money from the banks’ vault.
The armed group operated for nearly an hour without interference from security agencies, having injured or disarmed members of the Amotekun Corps before their operation.
“I can confirm the killing of a man at one of the banks. He was shot in the head,” a source said.
“The lifeless body was there until police arrived at the scene and people dispersed. I heard that two others were shot dead at another place.”
The community leader, Oba Adejimi Alagbado condemned the attack, saying that security agencies have been alerted.
“It is an unfortunate incident that we do not expect to happen. The attacks were on two commercial banks. I have called the Area Commander, DPO and DSS and they have all assured the soldiers around the axis have been alerted,” he said.
