Between January and December 2023, a total of 604 deaths were recorded in 1196 road crashes in Osun, Oyo, and Ondo States, the Zonal Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC said.
Meshach Jatau, the FRSC Zonal Commander in charge of Osun, Oyo, and Ondo States made this known during an interview with journalists in Osogbo on Friday, adding that 3,266 people also got injured in road accidents in the three states within the period.
“A total of 7,833 people were involved in road accidents while 3,963 were rescued within the 12 months under review.”
“The Command within the period under review was able to intercept 72,388 drivers for various violations of traffic rules and regulations in 2023.
”We were able to apprehend 72,388 motorists in 2023 and we educated about 40,338 within the 12 months under review.
”The FRSC in the zone will not shirk its responsibilities by ensuring that improved driving habits lead to safer highways in the country,” Jatau said.
The FRSC boss assured that the Corps will not renege on its responsibility to keep the highways safe and charged personnel of the Corps to discharge their duties with professionalism in order not to constitute a security nuisance on the highways.
“The corps would continue to strategize with transport stakeholders towards ensuring safety on highways,” he added.
