To improve healthcare provisions in Enugu State, the World Health Organization, WHO, has revealed intentions to support the state government in the capacity development of healthcare coordinating officers in the state.

The WHO South East Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Chukwumuanya Igboekwu disclosed this at the 2024 Health Partners Coordinators’ Forum held in Enugu on Wednesday.

The Health Partners Coordinators forum is an annual event where all the state coordinators and partners pull their resources together to strengthen health partners, coordinators, and health governance, to strengthen the health sector.

The event was convened by the Enugu State Ministry of Health in conjunction with the WHO; it brought together Health Coordinators and Partners in the state to brainstorm on ways to improve healthcare delivery in line with the health agenda of the state Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah.

Speaking at the forum, Dr. Igboekwu, SE WHO zonal coordinator revealed areas they assist the state government in the sector; Health Emergency, Logistics to respond to health emergencies, Health policy, Primary HealthCare Revitalization, Immunization and Strategic Health Information Management amongst others and now, supporting Enugu state Government in Capacity development of all the state coordinating officers.

“Coordinators will also be trained in data analysis to enable them to analyze data effectively for better-informed decision-making.”

Igboekwu further stated that partners in the sector help in diverse areas; funding, technical assistance, implementing partners, supply of materials, drugs, and other medical supplies; “So, all partners in the health sector work together for an efficient health sector.” he said.

Also speaking at the forum, the Commissioner for Health in Enugu state, Professor Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi supporting the WHO representative said the forum allows them to know what is happening in different areas of the health sector even as they plan on how to strengthen the sector in the state.

The Commissioner further revealed that the forum will be sustained yearly for an effective and efficient health sector in the state.

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) means that all people have access to the full range of quality health services they need, when and where they need them, without financial hardship—WHO.

The meeting was attended by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Yomi Jaye, WHO, UNICEF, Caritas Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa, and State Coordinators from the Federal medical institutions in Enugu state, which included the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), 82 Division Clinic, National Orthopedic Hospital, Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Police Service Clinic.

Other agencies present were Esut Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu State Agency for Universal Health Coverage, ENSACA, and Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency, amongst others.
