The power outage that persisted for several hours on Sunday is as a result of the collapse of the national grid, according to electricity distribution companies (discos).
The Abuja Electricity Distribution, AEDC, said the grid collapsed at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, leading to a nationwide blackout.
“The management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) wishes to inform its valued customers that the power outage being experienced is a result of a system failure from the national grid at 11:21 hours today, 4 February 2024, which has led to a nationwide power outage,” the AEDC announced on X.
The Kaduna Electric Distribution Company (KEDC) in a statement also announced a “loss of bulk power supply” which is why there is a power outage in Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States.
This is the first grid collapse in 2024 after it collapsed thrice in 2023.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, said “gas constraints” caused the system disturbance.
“Gas constraints continue to impact grid flexibility and stability. Ensuring sufficient gas supply to power-generating stations is crucial for grid stability as sufficient generation allows for better grid management in the event of sudden generation losses like this,” TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah said in a statement.
