A local fisherman, Alhaji Kasabo Gungun-Sakaci, from Gungun-Sakaci village in Kebbi State has caught a hippopotamus.

The Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, then offered the live hippopotamus as a donation to Governor Dr. Nasir Idris of Kebbi State during the ‘Yauri Annual Regatta and Cultural Festival 2024’ in Yauri town.

Impressed by the fisherman’s bravery, Bello Ka’oje, the representative of Suru/Baguio Federal Constituency, expressed his admiration and donated a new car to the fisherman.
The Emir while presenting the donation enumerated some of the governor’s impactful feats in the region during his brief tenure.

Zayyanu-Abdullahi suggested that the animal be kept in the museum for upkeep “so that whenever there are important visitors to the state, they can be taken there for recreational activities.”

Governor Idris while receiving the gift appreciated the emir, describing the entire festival as a fantastic event that showcased the ability of the monarch to foster unity amongst the people of the emirate.

“I assured that my administration will partner with the emirate to project the Rigata cultural festival; we will make sure that next year’s festival is celebrated at its permanent site.

“Our government is collaborating with Ministers of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, and that of Education (State), Dr Yusuf Tanko-Sununu, to ensure the construction of Malandu-Warrah road,” he said.

The governor said in line with his campaign promises, construction of the Warrah township road had already begun, adding that in two weeks, a five-kilometer road construction in Argungu would be awarded.

In his speech, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reminded the people that the Federal Government had established the Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPADEC) to ensure rapid development of the people of the areas.
