The Transition Chairman of the Nnewi South local government area, Hon. Ikenna Aniagboso, has resumed work at the Nnewi South local government secretariat in Ukpor, for the first time since his appointment. For the first time in almost two years, Nnewi South local government secretariat is opening for work. It would be recalled that the headquarters of Nnewi South local government area in Ukpor, was closed down nearly two years ago, following an attack by gunmen, which left different parts of the local government secretariat destroyed.

Precisely in March 2022, gunmen attacked and destroyed parts of the local government, only a few weeks into Governor Soludo’s administration. The attack on the local government secretariat which correlates with the then rising insurgency in Ukpor and parts of Anambra State, signaled an end to government presence in Ukpor, with the police station opposite the local government area also destroyed. Under that very uncertain environment, not only was the market very close to the local government deserted, but Ukpor was also deserted, as many scampered for safety.

Since then, all political and government activities of Nnewi South have been conducted in Nnewi North local government headquarters. The office of Nnewi South local government and its Chairman, Hon. Aniagboso, operated from Nnewi North local government secretariat, until Thursday, February 29th, 2024, when Nnewi South local government secretariat was re-opened after major reconstruction works and furnishing were completed. The re-opening of the local government secretariat also signaled, on one hand, an end or near end to the nefarious activities of criminals in Ukpor which was once a haven for gunmen, and the re-establishment of government presence and control, on the other.

The re-opening of Nnewi South local government secretariat witnessed visitors, many of whom were coming to the local government or Ukpor, for the first time in over two years. The House of Assembly members representing Nnewi South I and II constituencies, Hon. Nonso Atuchukwu and Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi, were in attendance. Also in attendance was the Bishop of Amichi Diocese, Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor, who performed the re-dedication ceremony, and other stakeholders, as well as staff of the local government secretariat.

The Transition Chairman of the local government, Hon. Ikenna Aniagboso, thanked the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, homeland security team, Nnewi North local government, all stakeholders and indigenes of Nnewi South local government, assuring them of getting nothing short of the best as he settles with his team.
