The Kebbi State command of the Nigeria Customs Service has reopened the Kamba land border following a directive by President Bola Tinubu for the reopening of borders with the Niger Republic in compliance with the decisions of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its last Extraordinary Summit in Abuja.

Kamba is a significant and strategic border that contributes significantly to Kebbi’s revenue generation.

Mohammed Tajuddeen Salisu, the Public Relations Officer of Kebbi Customs, said in a statement that the border reopening was witnessed by critical stakeholders, including the district head of Kamba, Alhaji Mamuda Fana, and other relevant agencies.

The statement said: “The reopening is aimed at facilitating legitimate trade beneficial for national development; it does not permit the importation of prohibited items that could harm the economy or compromise national security.

“Customs officers are committed to facilitating legitimate trade within the confines of the law, ensuring smooth trade operations across the Kamba Border as long as importers adhere to Customs regulations, declare goods accurately, and pay required duties to the government.”

The statement reiterated that exporting food grains from the country remains prohibited due to concerns over food scarcity.

The district head of Kamba, Alhaji Mamuda Fana while responding, expressed gratitude for the government’s initiative, and noted that it is a beacon of hope for cross-border traders and small-scale businesses in Kamba town.

He pledged to educate his people on the importance of engaging in legitimate trade practices by adhering to laid down rules.
