The founder of Madonna University, Rev. Fr Emmanuel Edeh, has come under fire for claiming that female students who enter the university as virgins graduate in the same state.
This remark has sparked debate about virginity, religious influence on university life, and student freedoms on social media.
In a recent interview, Fr Edeh boasted that Madonna University’s “high moral standards” ensure female students maintain their virginity throughout their studies.
He claimed this makes graduates from the university, especially ladies desirable for marriage.
“Madonna University is unique in its following way – high morals and discipline. Madonna is known for its high morals and discipline thus in academics,” Fr. Edeh said.
He continued, “It is only in this university that it is clearly maintained that girls who have entered the university as virgins graduate as virgins. You can enter our university as virgins and graduate as virgins.”
“Tell me any other university in the whole world that can maintain this. That is why people from London, America, England, Germany, when you meet them, they will say Father, we want to marry a girl who is a virgin. And they don’t tend to get that until they come to Madonna University.”
Critics have condemned the statement. Many argue it is unrealistic to expect young adults to abstain from all sexual activity during their university years. Others point out that virginity is a personal choice and not a mark of morality. Questions have also been raised about how the university enforces such a standard, fearing it might infringe on student privacy.
Madonna University, a private Catholic institution, is known for its strict rules on conduct and dress code.
Fr Edeh also said that cultism, molestation, examination malpractice and all other social vices cannot be found in the school.
“Madonna is a university where there is no secret cultism, molestation, exam malpractice, no bullying, zero tolerance for hard drugs, and zero tolerance for sexual immorality,” he said.
