A team from the ECOWAS Commission, led by Mrs. Massandje Toure-Litse, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, visited the Anambra Central Fish Village located in Adazi Nnukwu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. The visit is part of the tour by the ECOWAS team to evaluate significant agro investments that may require assistance that can be given by the Commission, to boost the economic fortunes of the people for its vision of shared prosperity for all the people of the Community. The team of the ECOWAS Commission includes Mr. Abdou Kolley, the Chief of Staff to the President of ECOWAS, and His Excellency, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray. Mr. Abdou Kolley also doubles as the Director of Cabinet of the ECOWAS Commission. Also on the team is Dr. Gle Emmanuel of the Directorate of Rural Development at the ECOWAS Commission. The team also has Mr. Amos of the Communications Directorate of the Commission, among others.  Earlier, the ECOWAS Commission delegates participated in the graduation of about 150 Anambra youth trainees on table fish production, whose training the Commission supported with about $58, 700.

The visit to the fish village in Adazi Nnukwu was facilitated by Mr. Emeka Iloghalu, a passionate fish farmer and fish value chain business development expert, as well as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Business Development Agency – FABDA, an agency of the Government of Anambra State. Mr. Iloghalu it was, who secured the ECOWAS funding for the training in table fish production.

The administration of Chief Willie Obiano secured funding to establish a fish village in the three senatorial zones of the state. But the project was not completed in any of the senatorial zones, till the end of the tenure of that government, leaving them effectively abandoned.

During the visit to the Anambra central senatorial zone’s fish village, the delegates of the ECOWAS Commission, led by Mrs. Massandje, were received by the Town Union leadership of Adazi Nnukwu headed by the President General- PG, Engr. Cyril Anetoh. In his opening remarks, the PG begged the ECOWAS Commission to intervene and bring the fish village to life. “We want to beg you to help and make this thing (the fish village) happen,” Engr. Anetoh said

After the visit to the site and inspection of the fish village, Mrs. Massandje Toure-Litse, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, expressed optimism about the potential of the fish village. She however advised that her optimism should not be taken as approval. This is because the findings from the site will be subjected to the evaluation of the Commission’s technical team before presentation to the Commission’s Board for final approval. However, she also made a case for women’s inclusion in the project, when the support is granted by the Commission. “We saw a great place and I have instructed the Director of Rural Development to see what we can do and present to the Board. We see a great future in this place. But we want the technical people to make an evaluation and be sure. We will see what the technical team will look at. Women will be given 50% of what we have,” Mrs. Massandje said in part.

The Anambra Central Fish Village has the potential for thousands of direct and indirect jobs with chances of an appreciable economic fortune for the people, in line with the ECOWAS Community vision of shared prosperity for the people of the ECOWAS Community.
