The Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah refutes speculations by residents of a possible increase in tax rate stating that his administration only expanded the tax dragnet with a formidable commitment to enforcing the already existing tax laws.

Governor Mbah stated this on Saturday at a Town Hall meeting organized by the state government in fulfillment of the promise to run an open and accountable administration; theme: Issues of Governance- the Journey so far.

The meeting held at the Banquet Hall Old Government Lodge GRA was well attended and issues relating to governance were discussed.

Identifying education as the strongest weapon to fight poverty, Mbah revealed that 260 Smart Schools across 260 political wards in the state are part of his plans to eradicate illiteracy and poverty.

The Smart Schools he said will become fully operational in September 2025 and children between ages 3 to 12 will receive 12 years of compulsory and free education in these schools; the children will be equipped with digital tools such as Tablets and desktop computers for learning.

“Our children will now be using tablets to study and teachers will be using smart boards to teach while the students would learn about artificial intelligence, robotics, and others that will make them technologically inclined,” Mbah said.

Commending the Federal Government’s removal of electricity from the exclusive to the concurrent list, the Enugu State Governor said the state has taken advantage of this to establish the Enugu State Electricity Commission. Electricity he said is a major infrastructural requirement for the private sector and the economy to thrive.

Mbah further revealed his administration’s efforts in other sectors: 30 contracts have been awarded for the construction of health centres, the construction of more hostels and classrooms in the school of nursing to accommodate more students, promise to construct 1,250 km of roads annually.

Promising to prioritize workers’ welfare, Governor Mbah said he will continue to pay wage awards to state government workers until the committee on new minimum wage concludes its assignment.

The pensioners are not left out as Governor Mbah said that he is currently clearing the backlog of unpaid pensions his administration met.

“Today we are working seriously to clear that of primary school teachers and Local Government workers.”

Plans to set up a Commission for People Living with Disability once the state Government and the State House of Assembly domesticate the National Disability Acts.

Participants at the meeting are representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), CBOs, Women, Students, Youths, Business Owners, Traders, Transport Unions, People Living with Disabilities, Professional Associations, traditional rulers, and the media.
