The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has expelled 19 students for various offences, including theft, examination malpractice, and other violations of the school’s code of conduct.
The announcement, made by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, included the expulsion of six final-year students.
The expulsions follow recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee after its recent meetings.
Offences ranged from academic dishonesty, like exam malpractice, to more serious transgressions, including theft, hostel bed-space racketeering, extortion, and assault.
Mr Akogun stated that penalties varied based on the severity of the offence. While some students received expulsion, others faced rustication, meaning suspension for either a semester or a full academic year.
The affected students were from various academic levels, including freshmen, sophomores, and upperclassmen.
The university administration expressed disappointment in the students’ actions. UNILORIN, known for its commitment to academic integrity, has a zero-tolerance policy for such misconduct.
The penalties serve as a strong message to the student body about the importance of upholding academic integrity and adhering to the university’s code of conduct.
