Popular Nigerian nightlife promoter, Pascal Okechukwu, better known as Cubana Chief Priest, has pleaded not guilty to charges of abusing the Nigerian currency, the naira.
The arraignment took place on Wednesday at the Federal High Court, Lagos, before Justice Kehinde Ogundare.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, brought three charges against Cubana Chief Priest, accusing him of spraying and tampering with naira notes during a social event. This act allegedly contravenes the provisions of the Central Bank Act of 2007.
Following his not-guilty plea, the court granted Cubana Chief Priest bail.
The bail sum was set at N10 million with two sureties who must meet specific criteria, including being employed by the federal or state government at a high level and owning verified landed property.
Additionally, Cubana Chief Priest must surrender his travel passport to the court’s custody. The judge ruled that the bail conditions must be perfected within seven days.
This case has drawn attention to the ongoing debate about respect for the naira and the cultural practice of spraying money at celebrations. The Central Bank of Nigeria has previously condemned such acts, emphasising the importance of treating the naira with care.
Cubana Chief Priest’s trial is expected to proceed in the coming weeks. The outcome will be closely watched by those interested in the enforcement of naira abuse regulations.
