The Kaduna State House of Assembly has set up a committee to investigate the government’s expenditure and project implementation during Nasir El-Rufai’s tenure as governor, which spanned from 2015 to 2023.
The committee’s focus will include scrutinising loans, grants, and how these funds were used for projects undertaken during El-Rufai’s eight years in office.
This move comes amid concerns raised by the current governor, Uba Sani, regarding a significant debt burden inherited from his predecessor. Sani specifically said he inherited a debt of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities from the past administration.
Speaker of the House, Hon. Yusuf Liman, inaugurated the 13-man committee during plenary on Tuesday to investigate unfinished projects and foreign loans acquired by the previous administration.
Liman stressed the public’s right to know how their tax money was spent and hopes those summoned by the committee will provide crucial details for potentially recovering funds tied to incomplete projects.
The committee is expected to invite relevant individuals for questioning, including former speakers of the Assembly, commissioners from El-Rufai’s administration, and other key figures who can shed light on financial decisions made during that period
The probe will explore a wide range of financial activities, with a particular focus on: scrutinising the details surrounding loans obtained during El-Rufai’s governorship, and how the funds were utilised; examining how grant money was allocated and spent; and the investigation of unfinished projects to determine the reasons for delays and identify potential solutions.
