Ten governors from northern Nigeria are set to travel to the United States next week to attend a security symposium focused on addressing regional challenges.
The symposium, organised by the Africa Center at the United States Institute of Peace, will bring together the governors with US officials and security experts to discuss solutions for combating insecurity in northern Nigeria.
Governors Dikko Radda of Katsina State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State are expected to attend. Others include the Governors of Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, and Sokoto States.
A press statement by Ibrahim Mohammed Kaula, chief press secretary to Governor Radda, said the event is scheduled between 23 and 25 April 2024, in Washington, DC.
The governors are expected to participate in discussions on strengthening regional security cooperation, fostering information sharing, and exploring potential avenues for US assistance in tackling these issues.
“The Africa Center seeks to empower governors to address the underlying causes of instability and strengthen peace-building initiatives at local and state levels,” Kaula added.
The United States Institute of Peace is a national, nonpartisan, independent institute, founded by Congress and dedicated to the proposition that a world without violent conflict is possible, practical and essential for U.S. and global security.
The U.S. Institute of Peace established the Africa Center in October 2020 to deepen, elevate, and expand the Institute’s commitment to stem violent conflict in Africa by advancing dialogue and informing policy that is underpinned by evidence, experience, and learning.
