At the High-Level African Counter-Terrorism meeting in Abuja on Monday, the National Security Advisor, Nuhu Ribadu, delivered promising news regarding Nigeria’s battle against terrorism.
Ribadu revealed that there has been a substantial decline in terrorism-related fatalities over the past few months, marking a significant victory in the country’s ongoing efforts to combat extremism and ensure the safety of Nigerians.
According to Ribadu’s report, which was based on comprehensive data analysis and intelligence assessments, terrorism-related deaths have dropped from an average of 2,600 per month to just 200—a remarkable decrease that highlights the effectiveness of recent security measures and strategic operations undertaken by Nigerian security forces in collaboration with state governors.
Ribadu attributed this positive development to the counter-terrorism efforts of President Bola Tinubu. “We are working, and I think we’ve done fairly well,” said Ribadu. “A lot of it people don’t really see, but behind a lot is ongoing. We salute our armed forces and security forces. Our governors are doing extremely well.”
One of the counter-terrorism measures taken by the Nigerian authorities is reducing the availability of AK-47 rifles. The price of an AK-47 has jumped from less than N1 million to over N5 million in the past year, making it difficult for non-state actors to acquire them.
In Ribadu’s words, “One of the things that we have seen as an indication that things are beginning to look different, for example, is AK-47, which used to be sold for less than N500,000 last year but now goes for N5 million. This means it is not available, and we are mopping them up, taking them out, and destroying them. We do not just take; we destroy.
