The Multinational Joint Task Force, MNJTF, has launched a surge in operations aimed at eliminating the remaining Boko Haram fighters in the Lake Chad Basin.
Residents in Northeast Nigeria and Far North Cameroon can expect to see an increased presence of troops and military equipment in the coming days.
This escalation comes as the MNJTF seeks to capitalize on recent successes against the insurgency. The force reports a decline in Boko Haram’s strength, with some surrendering and others intercepted attempting to acquire weapons.
The aim of this intensified operation is “to bolster the efforts of various national operations and eradicate terrorists and their enclaves within the MNJTF’s areas of operations” as contained in a statement from the MNJTF.
The increased presence of troops is not meant to cause alarm, authorities assure. Instead, they urge residents to cooperate with the MNJTF and provide any information that might help apprehend Boko Haram stragglers.
The MNJTF says the ultimate objective of this offensive is “to cleanse the Lake Chad basin of all terrorists” and ensure lasting peace and stability across the region.
