A heartbreaking incident occurred in Kano, Nigeria, on Wednesday, 15th May 2024. An explosion ripped through a mosque in Gadan village during the early morning prayers, leaving a trail of devastation.
One worshipper tragically lost his life in the blast with at least 24 worshippers, including four children, injured.
While initial reports suggested a potential terrorist attack, Kano State Police spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna, revealed a different narrative.
“Forensic analysis at this preliminary stage revealed a suspected petrol explosion,” said Haruna in a statement published by local media.
A suspect, 38-year-old Shafiu Abubakar, was arrested and investigations point towards a personal dispute over inheritance as the possible cause.
Abubakar told the police that “his action was purely in hostility following a prolonged family disagreement over sharing of inheritance, of which those that he alleged to have cheated on him were in the mosque at that moment, and he did that for his voice to be heard,” the police statement said.
The explosion occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. during the Subh prayer, the first prayer of the day for Muslims.
The force of the blast ripped through the mosque in Gadan Village, leaving behind a scene of destruction and injured worshippers.
Emergency services swiftly responded, deploying a team of security personnel to secure the area and Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts to investigate the cause of the explosion.
Medical personnel rushed the injured, including 20 men and four children, to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano for treatment. The extent of their injuries remains unknown.
The Kano State Police Force has assured the public of a thorough investigation to determine the full cause of the explosion and hold those responsible accountable.
