Yobe State in Nigeria has taken an unorthodox approach in its fight against Boko Haram insurgents. The state government has launched a “spiritual war” to combat the repeated destruction of electricity towers by the militant group.
These attacks, which began in December 2023, have plunged Yobe and neighbouring Borno State into darkness, disrupting daily life and hindering economic activity.

In response to repeated attacks, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State led a prayer session on Wednesday, involving leading Muslim clerics and Quranic students.
The Yobe State government has already twice shouldered the burden of repairing the damaged towers. However, the relentless targeting by Boko Haram underscores the persistent struggle against the insurgency.
Cows were sacrificed during the prayer session, with prayers offered to expose and punish those responsible for the attacks.
The prayers also focused on exposing the sponsors of the terror groups behind the attacks, their supporters; those who help them with the tools used in the destruction of the towers, their transporters to the scene of the crime, whoever knows but refuses to expose them; buyers of the vandalised tower parts, and transformers thieves.
