In a major blow to criminal gangs in Taraba state, Nigerian Army troops apprehended six suspected kidnappers during separate operations on 19th May.
The arrests were conducted by troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sub Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS.
Acting on intelligence, soldiers from the 93 Battalion raided Chinkai village in Wukari local government area. Their swift action resulted in the capture of two suspects, Usman Gide Ali (25 years old) and Abdulrahman Amadu (28 years old).
According to military sources, these individuals even attempted to bribe the soldiers with N2 million to secure their release.
A statement by Lieutenant Oni Olubodunde, acting army spokesperson for the 6 Brigade, confirmed the bribe attempt and revealed that the suspects confessed to belonging to a notorious kidnapping ring active in the area.
“The suspects were also overheard stating that if money fails to secure their freedom, their associates would resort to armed means to rescue them from custody,” Lt. Olubodunde added.
Meanwhile, another group of troops stationed in Ibi apprehended four additional suspects: Jafaru Banyi (28 years old), Mohammad Ardo (25 years old), Amadu Lawal Shatta (20 years old), and Biyu Ardo (25 years old).
These individuals are believed to be involved in several high-profile kidnappings that have plagued the region.
The Commander of the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, said these arrests demonstrate the Nigerian Army’s commitment to tackling the rampant kidnapping issue in Taraba.
He commended the troops’ refusal to accept bribes, saying it was a clear demonstration of their professionalism and integrity.
