Six Boko Haram insurgents, including a young man identified as a commander of the terrorist group, have surrendered to troops in Borno state, according to a statement from the Multinational Joint Task Force, MNJTF.
The 22-year-old, named Adamu Muhammad, reportedly participated in attacks within Kukawa LGA in Borno, especially in Kangarwa, Alagarno, Doro Naira, and Dogon Chikwu villages.
Military officials believe Adamu and others may have belonged to Boko Haram’s splinter faction Islamic State of West Africa Province, ISWAP, before escaping and surrendering.
“The terrorists escaped from the ISWAP faction hideout in Jubillaram, situated in Southern Lake Chad,” the statement reads.
The MNJTF gave the names of other surrendered fighters as Isah Ali, 18 years old; Hassan Modu, 18 years old; Nasir Idris, a 23-year-old escort for the Commander of Jubillaram, Usman Rash; Abba Aji, 21 years old; and Abubakar Isah, 20 years old.
“During their surrender, they handed over 11 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and one warhead of anti-aircraft rounds,” according to the statement.
Their surrender brings the total number of Boko Haram fighters who have surrendered to the military since the commencement of the operation codenamed “Operation Lake Sanity II” in late April to 119.
The defectors are currently ongoing investigation. The MNJTF has urged other terrorists to “follow suit, lay down their arms, and embrace peace” while stating their commitment to secure the troubled Lake Chad region.
