In a brazen attack, over 100 hoodlums stormed the Ipaja Police Station in Lagos early Monday morning. The incident resulted in a fierce exchange of gunfire between the assailants and police officers, causing panic among residents in the area.
While the exact motive remains unclear, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, linked the attack to the ongoing daily police clampdown on Okada riders in the area while confirming the attack and the ensuing gun battle.
“The attack came after police officers commenced the day’s enforcement of the existing ban on motorcycles in Lagos State. The attackers, who came in their hundreds, stormed the station with dangerous weapons, shooting at the officers and attempting to overrun the station,” stated Hundeyin.
Authorities swiftly dispatched police reinforcements from the Area Command and the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, to Ipaja to secure the area as the confrontation heightened.
While two of the attackers were “fatally injured”, according to Hundeyin, no police officers were reported injured during the incident.
An undisclosed number of individuals were arrested by the police with over 200 motorcycles impounded. A locally-made firearm was also retrieved.
