Illiteracy, decay of ethical values, and ignorance are said to be some factors responsible for the economic crisis that bedeviled Nigeria.
University Don with Modibbo Adama University, MAU Yola, Prof. Bello Idi stated this during sensitization meeting on Tsangaya Education System Reformation organized by DAFEE in collaboration with PLAN International and Forum for African Women Educationalists FAWE, Nigeria held at the palace of the Village Head of Yolde-Pate in Yola South local government area.
Prof. Idi who is the chairman of the meeting, underscores the importance of education to be with trades, noting that the country will prosper, if the populace is literate and skilled in various trades.
“Parents should take up their responsibilities of ensuring proper upbringing of their children for them to become responsible members of the society by giving them sound education and encouraging them to learn trades, stressing that children are gifts from Allah,” he said.
Earlier, the Executive Director of DAFEE, Dr. Usman Ahmed Dadah explained that the project to modernize the teaching in Tsangaya schools has been in existence for decades.
“The meeting is to obtain inputs from the residents on ways to modernize the Tsangaya system of education to enable them to operate in line with the changing times,” he said.
In their separate remarks, officials of the Forum for African Women Educationists FAWE, Nigeria, Dr Helen Mathias and Ibrahim Bello said the aim of reforming the Tsangaya education system is to ensure every child acquires education.
The officials, while calling on women to assist their husbands with child upbringing, expressed delight with the level of acceptability of the project by the community and urged those in attendance to pass the information to others.
In his speech, the Village Head of Yolde-Pate in Yola South local government area, Alhaji Muhammadu Jingi pledged to support the project to make it worthwhile and charged residents to embrace the project for the benefit of the community.
Some people who spoke at the event advocated that each migrant Islamic teacher should register his presence with the community leader along with the number of pupils under his custody.
According to them, activities and mode of teaching of the migrant Islamic teacher should be closely monitored to ensure that the teachings conform to the acceptable Islamic teachings.
They also decried the looting of equipment at the abandoned Tsangaya School built in the area during President Jonathan’s administration, and called for its resuscitation.
