AfricaNewsNigeriaMalawi Scrambles to Locate Missing Vice President and 9 Others After Plane Vanishes

An aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima, and nine others has gone missing, according to a statement from the president’s office. The Malawi Defence Force aircraft “went off the radar” after taking off from the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning.
The plane was expected to land at Mzuzu International Airport, in the country’s north, at 10:02 a.m. local time. However, air traffic control instructed the pilot to turn around due to bad weather and poor visibility. The aircraft disappeared from the radar shortly after.
President Lazarus Chakwera has assured the public that all available resources are being spared to find the missing plane. The search operation is ongoing, with soldiers searching the mountainous forests near Mzuzu. The US, UK, Norway, and Israel have offered assistance in the search operation, providing specialised technologies to aid in the search.
Vice President Chilima was on his way to represent the government at the funeral of a former cabinet minister, Ralph Kasambara. The group on board also included former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri and eight others.
The cause of the disappearance is yet to be determined, and the search operation continues.
