Anambra State-owned Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University has unveiled an action plan on how to address the adverse impact of climate change across all three campuses of the university. For the first time, the university shall be hosting the 2024 Tree Planting and Climate Action Summit. This summit will be held on July 17th, 2024 at the Igbariam campus of the university and will mark the beginning of the climate action by the Institution.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Dr. Harrison Madubueze, noted that the summit will feature “keynote address and panel discussions on climate change mitigation strategies and environmental stewardship.” The PRO also revealed that the summit will unveil “the COOU 5-year strategic plan for tree planting and climate action.” He further noted that the summit will feature “symbolic tree planting activities by dignitaries, stakeholders, volunteers and members of the university community.”
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, has reassured of her commitment to a green and friendly environment at the university. According to the Vice Chancellor whose vision for the university anchors on Visibility, Viability, and Values, the tree planting initiative is not only targeted at a green and friendly environment but also as a means of checkmating destructive wind on the campus so as to create a viable learning environment. To this end, Prof. Omenugha revealed that the university has come up with the “One Staff One Tree, One Student One Tree” initiative, which implies that every staff and every student of the university will plant at least one tree within any campus of the university.
More so, Prof. Omenugha has said that the university is targeting to plant over sixty thousand trees for the start, and ultimately expects to have over one million trees planted across the university campuses in Igbariam, Uli and Awka.
