Ahead of the 2024 Eid-el Kabir festival, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State had visited all the custodial centres in the state and ordered the release of 23 inmates on Friday.
The governor was also said to have paid transport fees of those released to their various destinations.
During the governor’s visit, cases of 18 lifers were reviewed: 10 lifers had their sentences commuted to 21 years imprisonment, six lifers had their sentences commuted to 10 years imprisonment, and two lifers had their sentences commuted to two years imprisonment.
Similarly, a female inmate serving seven years imprisonment was reviewed and reduced to six months imprisonment.
The reduction and release cut across, health ground and the belief that the inmates have reformed.
Reacting to the release, the Controller of Corrections in the state, Mr Danmairomu Shuaib Ayodeji, appreciated the governor for the good gesture and advised the inmates to be worthy ambassadors of their various homes and not to return to crime.
Ayodeji applauded the State Ministry of Justice for a job well done, noting that such exercises will reduce congestion in the custodial centres.
