A vigilante commander and five other persons have been feared dead in Nnewi and Nnobi Communities of Anambra State in a gun battle between security operatives and hoodlums in the two communities.

According to reports made available to journalists on Monday the gun men stormed Nnewi before heading to Nnobi where they also unleashed mayhem.

It was reported that some security operatives gave the gun men a chase in Nnewi leading to their escape through Nnewi-Ichi Road.

At Nnewi Ichi, the gun men were said to have seen some vigilante men chasing after them and waited for them there.

Sources said that the hoodlums opened fire on the vigilante men and in the process shot down one security man and another unidentified person before veering towards Onyibo Junction at Nnobi in a bid to escape.

While at Onyibo Junction in Nnobi, the hoodlums were said to have met another group of security operatives blocking their way.

The attackers were said to have waited at the transformer close to the junction where the security operatives engaged them and, in the process, shot some people, including a nine-year child who was said to be running errands and two women. One of the women was said to be newly married and was returning from the garden carrying a basket of bitter kola on her head.

Sources said there was no incident at Nnobi Junction when the fleeing hoodlums reached there but only fired shots to scare street traders away from the road

However, on reaching,  Awka-Etiti the gunmen allegedly abducted an unidentified man driving a jeep, after pushing down his wife from the vehicle.

According to a source, the commander, identified as  Eloka  Onyejekwe was shot dead while the driver of the vigilante vehicle was shot on his legs.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Anambra State police command,  Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed the story saying information reaching him was still sketchy, even as he promised to go on air when he gets adequate information.
